Staff from local agencies have shared with us how our Renewed Hope’s services make a difference to the community through the work of our volunteers.
East Surrey Outreach Service works with rough sleepers across 4 Surrey boroughs. They are often at our Drop-In meeting their clients.
One of their keyworkers said, “I am blown away by how wonderful the volunteers are, the food is always cooked with such love. They are an inspiration, giving their time to serve sometimes difficult service users. It makes my heart so warm to witness the shared love. As for the service, what would our clients do without this safe warm and loving place. The drop-in service is priceless.”

Another one of the team shared, “Contributions of Volunteers and Staff of RHT go beyond the hours you spend; they touch lives and inspire hope. Every meal served, every bed prepared, and every supportive conversation held creates ripples that extend far into the future of those we all serve. The time and love you give freely rebuild lives and mend spirits. Thank you for being such an essential part of the Redhill community. Your work truly matters, and it’s important to remember that each gesture of help and every hour of service contributes profoundly to the wellbeing of the Service Users.
Renewed Hope is a one of its kind in East Surrey. There is no other night shelter or day support centre for homeless people in the area. Another ESOS worker said, “It’s such a great resource to have Renewed Hope so close and so welcoming to both ESOS and its guests. Working alongside you and all the supportive, helpful volunteers is helping to reduce homelessness in East Surrey. Well done and thank you for your excellent work!!”

Our night shelter returned this past winter giving accommodation to 30 period over 12 weeks from December to February. We work closely with locals councils to help support the most vulnerable and those who would otherwise have nowhere to go.
One of the housing officers said, “You (all at the charity) were non-judgmental and accepted him. No one else would do that. There was no where else who would take him.”

It’s always nice when you hear back from people who we’ve supported. This is from Alex, one of our residents who recently moved out of Hope House.
“I want to say a huge thankyou to you all for keeping me off of the streets, out of danger and for all the help on so many different things over these past few months. I hope I’ve left the room in the best of states for you to quickly move someone new into. You have all gone above and beyond in the speedy growth and re-development for me and I’d never be able to repay your kindness, but I hope one day to be able to support the charity in some form. I won’t be a stranger to the drop-in centre and wish you all the very best in your ventures both charitable and personal.

Alex stayed with us for just a few months; enough time to find his feet, get an apprenticeship and the confidence to go for it.
Renewed hope are delighted to be part of Run Reigate again this year. We are slightly older than Run Reigate, as we started in 2011 in Redhill, and have been offering daily help to homeless and vulnerable people through our drop in centre and winter night shelters ever since. As a local community based organization, we are very pleased to be part of this community celebration.
On 17th September, as well as cheering on our ”Team Renewed Hope” runners , we will be in the race village all day so look out for our red gazebo and come and say hello.
We are also looking for people to join our team for Run Reigate – either as runners (our motto – any distance, any age, any time), or as volunteers for our stand in the race village and the car park in the morning.
Your support would help ensure that homeless and vulnerable people have somewhere to go throughout the year for a warm welcome, a hot meal and one to one support.

They also met their fundraising target – currently the donation total stands at £78,500 . This will be split between the 4 charities – Renewed Hope, East Surrey Domestic Abuse, My Name’5 Doddies (Fighting Motor Neurone Disease) and Reigate Grammar school foundation.
Everyone at Renewed Hope would like to pay tribute to one of our founders, Ian Buckland, who has sadly died.
Nearly 15 years ago, Ian was one of the Redhill Street Pastors who saw a need for a winter night shelter during his time at the Salvation Army in the town.
Hope 2540 was born and the night shelter started in the winter of 2011/12. In its first year, it ran for just 6 weeks in a handful of venues, serving homeless people from the Reigate and Banstead Borough to begin with.
Volunteers and guests from the early years will remember him for his gregarious personality, firm but kind and with an unwavering passion for helping homeless people.
He was visionary and without him Renewed Hope and the East Surrey Winter Night Shelter would not exist. You would see him on shift, driving minibuses, training volunteers – anything to keep the shelter running.
Over the years, the shelter grew to run for 15 weeks. It was hosted by 16 churches in 2019/20, supporting people from the Tandridge District as well as Reigate and Banstead Borough. He may have been proud to learn it’s making a return next winter after a three-year break caused by Covid.
Everyone at Renewed Hope wishes his family well and they are in our thoughts and prayers at this sad time.
He is remembered with affection.

In 2022 Renewed Hope had great success in raising our profile in Reigate and Redhill, and in getting support from people across our community.
We are building on this in 2023 , with a calendar of different events, including 4 street collections . Can you help with any of these ?
We need as many volunteers as possible throughout the day at all of these events , acting as ambassadors for Renewed Hope – engaging people , talking about Renewed Hope and inviting contributions and support.
If you can help for an hour or two on any of these days, please let me know and I will book you in.
You will be joining a lovely team, and will really contribute by raising awareness about the issues of homelessness and isolation in Redhill, Reigate and East Surrey as well as raising much needed funds for our work.
