Our History

Renewed Hope began life in 2009 as a social enterprise project called ‘Hope 2540’. It was set up by a group of local church leaders when Street Pastors saw the need for more services for homeless people. We now support many people in need, both homeless and those housed and isolated.

Our Timeline

• 2009 – ‘Hope 2540′ was started by two of the Redhill Street Pastors’ at the request of Reigate and Banstead Borough Council to address needs of homeless people in Redhill town centre and a Drop-in day service was opened in the Salvation Army Hall.
• January 2011 – There was a need for a winter night shelter in the Redhill area and the Reigate & Banstead Winter Night Shelter was born. The pilot ran for 6 weeks in just a handful of venues.
• 

  At the back of Christ Central church in Redhill, we occupied a kitchen and small lounge area and rented desk space upstairs

  2013 – Established office and day centre in Cromwell Road

• April 2015 – Renewed Hope was registered as a charity.
• January 2017 – After a short period of having no base following the closure of the unit in Cromwell Road, we signed a lease with Christ Central Church in Redhill. This enabled the Drop-In to expand from three days a week to five days a week in one place rather than in different halls.
• January 2017  – Staff team expands to include a Community Outreach Co-ordinator
• Winter 2017 – The Winter Night Shelter expands into Tandridge and is renamed the ‘East Surrey Winter Night Shelter’

A place to call home

Shrewsbury Chapel, where we move to in 2020 is home to our office and Drop-In day support services

• May 2018 Lease signed with Church Growth Trust, the owners of Shrewsbury Chapel in Redhill and plans are drawn up to renovate the building to provide a shower, office space upstairs, a meeting room and a catering kitchen
• June 2019 – Staff team expands to include a Fundraising Co-ordinator
• January 2020 – Moved office and Drop-In centre from Christ Central to Shrewsbury Chapel
• March 2020 – The Covid-19 Pandemic brings the East Surrey Winter Night Shelter project to a close for 3 winters, however Drop-In continued as an adapted service throughout
• June 2021 – Staff team expands to include a Support & Recovery Worker
• February 2022 – Partnering with national charity Green Pastures, we opened first Hope House, a supported accommodation home for 4 previously homeless men
• December 2023 – Winter Night Shelter returns for the first time since the pandemic
• November 2024 – Received the Kings Award for Voluntary Service
• April 2025 – Two new churches come on board as venues for our Winter Night Shelter taking the total number to 13 churches
• November 2025 – As the need and complexity of Guests grows, the staff team expands to include a second Support Worker

Although we have never seen our role to be converting people to Christianity, the faith has underpinned what we do from the early days.

The name ‘Hope 2540’ is based on the Bible verse Matthew 25:40 where Jesus says:

“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

We welcome people of all faiths and none into our projects and our volunteers come from all backgrounds.
